“What inspires me about Beaton – more than just his work – is his approach to life, his endless documentation and cultivation of beauty. Beaton’s love of photographing people and flowers struck me. His 1927 self-portrait Boy Wonder, which lends its name to a section of the exhibition, was a key inspiration. I imagined the faces in my designs belonging to Beaton’s glamorous circle of friends at a fabulous London party. These became repeat patterns that we applied to silk scarves, cotton T-shirts, bags and more. I’m thrilled with the finished collection and think Beaton would approve.” Luke Edward Hall.
The NPG buying team has also curated an exclusive new collection inspired by Beaton’s career. Products include Bentwood trays, cotton tea towels and pocket mirrors.
In addition, Harriet Anstruther has created handcrafted silk corsages in three colours using her archival textile designs, priced at £295 each while Amelia Graham has designed a collection of monochrome silk scarves inspired by Beaton’s work.
Fashion and accessories in the collection include an exclusive Wallace Sewell scarf, a selection of Soho Scarves and jewellery by Lucas Jack. Homewares include a ceramic swan vase by Agata Bogacka, glassware by Vintage List and Uberstar.
